Grapefruit

I haven’t eaten grapefruit since I was 16 years old
But I remember how it tastes;
Sour, tart, refreshing, mouth puckering
Or citrus sweet when sprinkled with sugar.
Sliced in half and dripping
Each segment carefully lifted with a special pointed spoon
The carcass left empty and hollow.
Dregs squeezed into a glass for a shot of pure acid
The pips lined up around the edge of the plate
Because if you eat them, a tree could grow in your tummy.

I am now 26 years old.
The doctor tells me I have a tumour the size of a grapefruit
And a cyst the size of an apricot.
When I google ‘fibroid size 12cm’ I find a chart
Comparing growths of muscle and fibrous tissue to fruits;
Blueberry, strawberry, lime, peach, grapefruit, honeydew.
I imagine a fruit salad inside my abdomen.
I wonder if there are seeds and pips.
I wonder if they could grow.
